My shell config of six years
Twenty-three lines, and why the brevity is the entire point.
26 articles
My shell configuration has grown by about four lines a year. Everything I removed was something I added in an enthusiastic afternoon and never used again.
What survived
- A prompt showing the branch and nothing else
- History that is shared, deduplicated, and large
- Three aliases, all of them two characters
- Completion, because it pays for itself hourly
The rule I settled on: nothing goes in unless I have wanted it three separate times. Most things never reach three.
